FREEMASONRY &FREEDOM
Freemasonry and the founding of America cannot be separated; in some ways, America is a Masonic idea. At its core, Freemasonry embraced the radical notion that men could govern themselves through reason, virtue, and spiritual enlightenment, rather than through the divine right of kings or ecclesiastical authority. This concept of self-governance was revolutionary in the age of monarchies and state religions. The Masonic lodge room itself served as a model of democracy, where men of different backgrounds could meet as equals, elect their own leaders, and make decisions through debate and majority rule.
Many of America's founding fathers were active Freemasons, including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and Paul Revere. These men gathered in Masonic lodges where they practiced the arts of self-governance and civil discourse, developing the skills and relationships that would later prove crucial in forging a new nation.
